Who is Tiesto: what is his real name?

Tiesto is a Dutch DJ and record producer. He was voted “The Greatest DJ of All Time” by Mix magazine in a 2010/2011 poll amongst fans. His real name is Tijs Michiel Verwest.

Tiesto biography

Tijs Michiel Verwest was born on January 17, 1969, in Breda, North Brabant. His love for music blossomed when he was just twelve years old, as he would tune in to radio shows like the Ferry Maat Soulshow and In The Mix by Ben Liebrand.

At the age of fourteen, he took his passion for music to the next level and started DJing professionally at school parties. From 1985 to 1994, Tiësto secured residencies at various clubs in the Netherlands, all thanks to his manager’s support. At the Spock, a cozy club in Breda, he honed his live performance skills by captivating audiences from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. every weekend. During the early stages of his DJ career, Tiësto primarily played new beat and acid house.

In 1997, Tiësto co-founded Black Hole Recordings with Arny Bink, where he released the renowned Magik and In Search of Sunrise CD series. The following year, he crossed paths with producer Dennis Waakop Reijers, and the two have since collaborated extensively.

Between 1998 and 2000, Tiësto joined forces with Ferry Corsten under the alias Gouryella. His remix of Delerium’s “Silence” featuring Sarah McLachlan in 2000 propelled him into the mainstream spotlight. In 2001, he unveiled his debut solo album, In My Memory, which spawned several chart-topping hits and catapulted his career to new heights. Tiësto’s exceptional talent earned him the prestigious title of World No. 1 DJ in DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJs readership poll for three consecutive years, from 2002 to 2004.

Shortly after the release of his second studio album, Just Be, Tiësto made history by becoming the first DJ to perform live on stage at the opening ceremony of the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. In April 2007, he launched his radio show, Tiësto’s Club Life, on Radio 538 in the Netherlands, and also released his third studio album, Elements of Life. This album soared to the top of the Belgian album chart and Billboard’s Top Electronic Albums in the U.S., earning Tiësto a Grammy Award nomination in 2008.

Tiesto, the renowned Dutch DJ known for his chart-topping tracks like “The Business,” has regretfully withdrawn from performing at Super Bowl 2024. Citing unforeseen family circumstances, Tiesto expressed his sincere apologies for being unable to fulfill his commitment to the NFL.

Despite his initial enthusiasm, the timing of these unexpected issues has made it impracticable for him to honor his agreement with the league.

“I’m excited to be a part of the Super Bowl LVIII!. And it’s even more incredible that it’s in my favorite place, Las Vegas. Thank you to the NFL for having me. I cannot wait to party with you all at the big game!”
